One such question that’s been swinging between different content teams for the last few years is whether AI content creation<\/a> negatively impacts your Google ranking. A new set of data from Ahrefs<\/a>, analyzing about 150,000 pages and 100,000 searches, provides the definitive answer – and it’s not the one marketers were anticipating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even pages with a lot of AI content still appear in the top 10 on Google. Indeed, the pages that an AI detector rated 100% AI-written also went to the top three. It’s not that Google is punishing authorship, but rather quality, regardless of how it’s achieved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What the New Data Actually Shows<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Ahrefs analyzed pages using its own AI detection tool (built into Site Audit and Site Explorer) and found that more than half of top-three results (54.7%) had less than 20% AI-generated content. Pages scoring under 50% AI text captured 82.2% of top-three spots, while pages scoring a full 100% still made up 5.3% of top-three results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There wasn’t even a linear correlation from position 1 (27.1%) to position 10 (30.9%), with position 9 even having a higher score than position 10. To put it simply, there is a real, but mild, connection between AI-generated content and ranking place. Put another way, the link between AI-generated text and ranking position is real; however, it is not strong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There was a second, more interesting pattern: indexing. Pages with the least AI-flagged text appeared in Google’s index at a rate of 49.28%, based on Ahrefs’ index signals. That rate dropped steadily as AI-detection scores rose – down to 40.35% for pages flagged at 80% or higher. Fewer heavily AI-flagged pages made it into the index at all, even though the ones that did could still rank well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why This Matters for Digital Content Creation<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This data doesn’t give any excuse to publish unedited AI-generated content in bulk, but it also dispels the notion that Google hates AI content. Since 2023<\/a>, Google has stated that it values good content no matter how it is created, and this new dataset aligns with that. It is spam if it was created exclusively for rankings, but not if it is AI-generated, well-edited, and actually useful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The lesson for teams that are primarily creating digital content is this: If you have a detector score, it doesn’t tell you much you can do. It isn’t measuring depth, originality, internal linking, or factual accuracy – all the things that have always distinguished ranking pages from the rest. A high AI score does not mean a page is weak; it means it’s a good reason to review it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
